Skin Needling vs. Microdermabrasion: Which Should You Book First?

Understanding the difference
Both skin needling and microdermabrasion are popular treatments we offer at Clae—but they work in very different ways. While they share the goal of creating clearer, smoother, healthier skin, the method, downtime, and results can vary. So which should come first? Let’s break it down.

Microdermabrasion: gentle resurfacing
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliation treatment that gently removes dead skin cells from the surface using a diamond-tipped wand. It’s perfect for refining texture, unclogging pores, reducing dullness, and giving your skin an instant glow.

Best for a skin reset
We love microdermabrasion as a “reset” treatment—it’s ideal if your skin feels congested, looks lacklustre, or needs a refresh before an event. There’s no downtime and makeup can be applied straight after, making it a great option for first-timers or anyone needing a quick pick-me-up.

Skin needling: deeper results
Also known as collagen induction therapy, skin needling works below the surface. Tiny needles create micro-injuries that trigger your skin’s natural repair process—stimulating collagen, smoothing fine lines, fading acne scars, and improving overall firmness and clarity.

A treatment with long-term benefits
While skin needling is more intensive (with a few days of downtime), the results build beautifully over time. You’ll see improvements in tone, texture, pigmentation, and even elasticity with consistency. It’s a powerhouse treatment—but one that requires prep and aftercare.

So, which comes first?
We usually recommend starting with microdermabrasion if:

  • You’re new to skin treatments

  • You want something with no downtime

  • Your skin is feeling clogged or rough on the surface

Once your skin is clear and exfoliated, you’ll get even better results from skin needling. A smoother surface allows for more even penetration of the needling device and minimises the risk of congestion post-treatment.

Skin needling is best once your skin is prepped
If you’ve already had a few treatments or you’re targeting specific concerns like scarring, pigmentation, or deeper ageing signs—skin needling is your next step. It’s one of our most results-driven facials and ideal for building long-term skin confidence.
